Migrant Workers

Nonavailability of livelihood means and increasing distress at the rural areas have mandated interstate and intrastate migrations in India. Cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad etc. are some of the most populated cities in the world. The rate of migration is also high with many aspirated youths trying to settle in the big cities. This has flooded the unprepared city and many pollution-related issues are coming up. There is a short term shortage of resources as well because the integration of the region could not cope up with the migration rates.

In many parts, the local population sees these new neighbors a threat to their socio-linguistic balance, a threat to their culture. There are certain incidents which simply become the stereotypes and exist for long. They are often discriminated. Majority of the migrants are from the economically poorer to the poorer regions. Lack of basic amenities of sanitation, education facilities, public toilets & crumbling living spaces is the burning issue. It is noteworthy that the presence of these migrated cheap labors has helped the city-based industries to flourish. Various unorganized sector workers who are street vendors are catering to the needs of the poor section of the population by availing services at cheaper rates. Construction workers employed on a contractual basis, many food-delivery startups, cab services, security personnel, vegetable vendors etc. will be bereft without the presence of them. They play an important role in providing the services available near our doors.

There is a need to reciprocate to the needs of these ignored people who are none other than the countrymen and are only there legally owing to the constitution and in pursuit of their right to life; Although dignity in their life is missing and need desperate attention. The solution lies in recognizing the fact that all are human beings and must be treated equally.
