Coaching Institutes - India

It won’t be incorrect to say that an industry has been built up around the educational coaching institutes for getting students through the various entrance & qualifying examinations. At one hand, they do provide value addition through their classroom sessions, but on the other hand, they make a deep dent into the student’s financial backing. Majority of the common men of India are not so economically sound. Those who after all manage to arrange the funds in the jibe that their counterpart would clear the examination had not realized the quantum of the seats that India facilitates. This is true in the majority of the examinations. The net result is that student lost his confidence and as well the hard earned money. There is hardly any correlation between the talent that the students possess and the outcome of the exam, as Einstein said, we don't measure fish's talent in its ability to climb a tree. It tells us about the shabby educational model in India. It is now hijack...

सकरी गली की यात्रा

Image

Social Media Saga

Watching older posts in the Facebook, or Twitter, or Instagram, etc. is like walking back to the past. Social media – we interact with people in the digital platforms using the internet. There is a cycle which compels us to share more and more of our personal information, of our feelings, of our thoughts to the people who hardly matters. The idea is that more the number of people we know and make friend, more social we are. I find so less weight into this. Are we really becoming more social in the digital platform? The conversation which used to be private earlier is now readable 24x7 to the general public. Our life is no more private. We even share very personal photographs in the vibe that we are special. Well, everybody is special but then there is a tinge that those who share much, have much life, and thus is more special. The information that we share is subjected to judgments by the public at large and it is also a source of commercial exploitation. I think a bubble is being c...

India today

Today Indian parliament contains 43% parliamentarians with a criminal background. It is a matter of deep introspection what is happening in the country and how they ended up as a choice of the countrymen to become a member of the parliament. First, it reflects how deeply flawed is the Indian election system is. Second, it also reflects the priority of the countrymen who elected these individuals. One thing is we all need to be concerned about is how on earth will they legislate who themselves have committed such crimes? Is it the case that there are shortages of candidates in one of the most populated countries on earth? Why is that genuine leaders could not come up into the stage and become a part of the system? What compels to not choose the political career? The reasons are many. India is a lower middle-income country and there is an increasing gap between the incomes of the people. India is still 70% rural area and the infrastructure facilities such as education, health c...

Vegetarianism | Continuing as Vegan

Things have changed as I continued to stay vegetarian, through the years since I am away from home. During those days, I could afford to eat in a pure vegetarian environment, my home. As I moved out, first to the hostel, my first challenge was to flex myself. There were very few places where the hotels are pure vegetarian. I mean, one could get the veg food but then the non-veg food was also cooked there. I still remember how my father had to search for a pure vegetarian hotel when he first accompanied me for shifting in the hostel. It was a tedious task and although we found one, the food choice was limited and even though we had to eat there. I wondered why my father could not eat in a non-veg place. I related it with his sense of purity. I was led by tradition and not logic. I had no opinion why I have to choose a pure veg hotel even if the non-veg hotel could provide the same food. In the initial instances, I did not share the desk with the non-veg foodie. I could not sustain t...

Alternative technologies for a climate change resilient India

Coming of age has the weight of innovative technologies which could counter the ill effects of the increasing pressure on the resources. The old age technologies like the coal-based power plants, diesel/petrol-based vehicles which emit a large amount of harmful gases into the environment, even the less efficient machines and systems whose output-input ratio is less are some of the examples which affect the climate indirectly. Use of technology has to be strictly inclined with climate change in the mind. This is a continuous process and as well as capital-intensive matter. It needs good intention from both the provider and the receiver. Even if the technology provider is banging on the less efficient technology, or is harming the environment in some way or another, it is the receiver which should commit to the eco-products. There are already close initiatives like these where the provisions from the regulators made it mandatory to mention the source in the package of the product. Fir...

A bank account

Last night the caretaker of the building where I live came to my room for some internet help. Later, through a casual talk, I came to know that she does not have a bank account. She is a family of two, living in the terrace of the building in a single dilapidated room along with her 60-year-old father. I got an instinct to tell her that she should open a bank account, but I was short of the points and I partially failed to convince her in doing so. After she left the room, half convinced and half proud that she is better off not having a bank account, I remained in my room, with a vacuum of thought in my head. Well, here are some points why we should have a bank account and I also told her although not convincingly. First, it won’t harm us at all to have a bank account. There is absolutely no obligation. There is one government scheme which even offers us a number of benefits to open one. The Scheme is Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. It was launched in the year 2014 when the new...

Unregulated Capitalism is a vicious cycle

Capitalism is primarily the generation of surplus in the economy by the various industries and simultaneously taking measures that its consumption is happening by the people, domestic or international. It has certainly improved the lifestyle of the people materially but it can’t be said whether people are happier or not. Development is a subjective factor and to different people, it means differently. It is formed by the historical background, culture, and tradition of the people as such. For example in Bhutan where Buddhism is followed; the country is a net carbon negative emitter. But how is it related to capitalism? It surely is. Bhutan is one of the developing countries of the world and the promotion to manufacturing industries is one of the means to fast achieve the GDP growth and hence the economy. However, to manufacture is to exploit the natural resources – do mining and extract minerals, cut trees and utilize to make an end product, acquire land and build infrastructure,...

Multipolar world

Non-Alignment Movement was primarily started by 5 nations in which India was one helmed by the first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru. After two world wars, Britain was exhausted and lost its global prominence of being a colonial power. There are countries which had been the colonies for years and being exploited for man and resources for the benefit of the ruling country. Mid 20 th century was the time when a number of countries got independence and released from the stronghold of their colonial masters. They gained their sovereign power for the development of their countrymen. It was hard earned battle and the feelings were strong. It was during this time also that two countries US and USSR became the global power. Slowly they started to compete and the world was soon divided between them. These two countries were ideologically different as well. U.S. was mainly a capitalist oriented country while USSR has its root on communism. However, both these countries wanted every ...

Deeds and not birth

The  chaturvarna  system, as it exists in India and continues to do so except maybe in big cities where it is losing ground in the open space, in the rural areas, it is still significant. In the Bhagavad Gita, which is the source of the caste system in India, it is mentioned that Brahmins form the intelligent class, by deeds and not by birth! Vaishyas form the trader class, again by deed and not by birth and so on. The fact that the system is made rigid and the silos are divided among the castes so much so that no movement can take place between them is an act of the mischievous human. This is conflicting in itself, besides it had been a source of domination. In the current times, it is a source of hypocrisy and a political tool. Politicians make full use of this to get votes and it is universally known to everyone. People reverberates this rigidity as they do not want to change their status; the status came from the prevalent inequality, from hailing a caste against anothe...

The irony of the time

It is the age of social media and it is such a crispy tool that we no longer have to interact with people to know about them. People describe themselves in their social pages and they go on telling us what they like the most, what they dislike the most, how they spent their time during the weekend and so on. It is also something that goes on to tell us about the level of tolerance in the society, the vulnerable groups in the society, the topic which are the sensitivities of the masses, what masses okays and does not okay. It can be said that the political engagement of the people has increased but less so vividly and creatively; largely we are becoming the product of our diet of information and this is making us biased. People happen to form strong opinions about a subject matter and it has become easier to influence the opinion and thought process of the people, e.g. show them an extreme or a radical video (do make sure that the graphics of the video is appealing). If a person has ...
